A chin augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient
under intravenous sedation(twilight sleep) or general
anesthetic administered by an anesthesiologist.
I make a small cut either through the mouth or underneath
the chin and then place usually an extended or longer
implant, semi-solid, underneath the muscle/fascia
and on top of the jaw bone. I then close the incisions
with dissolvable sutures and put tape over the chin
area to prevent movement for about one week.
Light activity can be done within several days and
heavy and any activity after two weeks. There is
swelling and black and blue with most disappearing
in this time period.
Cheek implants as well as other implants like jaw
implants can be placed through various incisions,
primarily through the mouth to give more fullness
to the area implanted. The immobilization is about
the same as the chin. The cost of this is $4500
plus about $1500 for the MD anesthesiologist/hospital
operating room.
Complications for all implants can be difference
in position as well as infection with the need to
remove the implant, numbness among others.
